AI Shopping Agent and Retail Media Statistics: Who Owns the Cyber Week Conversion?
AI shopping agent and retail media statistics for Cyber Week 2026, and why the network that records the ChatGPT ad click first owns the conversion record.

A shopper asks ChatGPT to compare three pairs of running shoes during Cyber Week. The agent reads the reviews, weighs the prices and names a pick. Beside the answer is an ad for the same shoes, bought by the brand, and the shopper clicks it. The purchase happens on the retailer's own site, on a checkout page it built, behind its own tags and consent banner. OpenAI stepped back from checkout inside the chat in March 2026 to focus on product discovery, so this is the path OpenAI now supports into the holidays.
The agent did the comparing, the brand paid for the ad, and the retailer's checkout took the money. The brand will want proof that the ad sold something, and the retailer's media network is the one that saw the sale. Who can prove what the ad sold depends on who captured the click. Because the shopper came from a ChatGPT ad, OpenAI adds a click identifier to the landing page URL, and it arrives on the first pageview only. The retailer's media network can catch it there and keep it in its own cloud. It then sends one conversion record to OpenAI and to its own reports, and that network owns the signal. A network that misses it will reconcile its sales against OpenAI's reporting or against a match file held by an intermediary. In Cyber Week measurement, the first record wins.
Key AI shopping agent and retail media statistics
- OpenAI is "allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences while we focus our efforts on product discovery," the company said in March 2026 (OpenAI, March 2026).
- AI traffic to US retail sites will rise 130% year over year in the 2026 holiday season (Adobe, 2026 forecast).
- $47.5 billion in US online spending will come during Cyber Week 2026 (Adobe, 2026 forecast).
- ChatGPT's ads business reached a $1 billion annualized run rate about six months after launch (Digiday, August 2026).
- US retail media ad spending will reach $69.33 billion in 2026, up 17.9% (eMarketer, 2026).
- ROAS is the most in-demand metric among retail media buyers, at 88% (IAB Europe, Attitudes to Retail Media).
- A Fortune 50 retailer cut data variability across its third-party tools from an average of 35% to 1% with MetaRouter (MetaRouter case study).
Discovery moved into the chat, and the checkout stayed home. That leaves the conversion record on the retailer's side of the link, for whoever writes it down first.
Where AI shopping agents send the checkout
OpenAI tried to keep the purchase inside the chat and then handed it back. It launched Instant Checkout in September 2025 for purchases completed inside ChatGPT, and changed course in March 2026.
- The first version of Instant Checkout "did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide," OpenAI's announcement said (OpenAI, March 2026).
- Inside ChatGPT, Walmart's shopping agent Sparky now runs as an app that takes users from discovery to a Walmart environment with account linking, loyalty and payment (Retail Dive, March 2026).
- ChatGPT had 800 million weekly active users as of October 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said (TechCrunch, October 2025).
An OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch the company is deprioritizing development of Instant Checkout as a stand-alone feature. Merchants can still offer it for the time being through apps inside ChatGPT, and OpenAI supports checkout on merchants' own websites.
ChatGPT has the audience, and the purchase still leaves the chat. Even Walmart, with its own agent inside ChatGPT, brings the shopper back to a Walmart environment to pay. The order closes on the retailer's own website or inside an app the retailer runs, so the retailer sees the sale before anyone else does.
ChatGPT ads measurement and the Conversions API
ChatGPT became a paid channel in 2026, and OpenAI wrote its own rules for how a sale gets credited to an ad.
- Ads in ChatGPT began testing in the US on February 9, 2026, for Free and Go tier users (TechCrunch, February 2026).
- By August 2026, the ads business had reached a $1 billion annualized run rate, according to OpenAI's Dave Dugan (Digiday, August 2026).
- Beta self-serve access to OpenAI's Ads Manager opened to eligible advertisers in European markets on August 31, 2026 (Digiday, August 2026).
- The Conversions API is "a more reliable tracking source" than the pixel alone, in OpenAI's own words (OpenAI developer documentation).
- One day is the fixed window in which ChatGPT ads credit a view-through conversion after an eligible impression (OpenAI developer documentation).
- When the pixel and the Conversions API send the same conversion, OpenAI deduplicates on the Pixel ID, event name and event ID and keeps the first event it receives (OpenAI developer documentation).
When a shopper clicks through from a ChatGPT ad, OpenAI attaches a privacy-preserving click identifier to the landing page URL. That identifier exists only on the first pageview. MetaRouter's write-up of its Conversions API support for ChatGPT Ads explains how it is stored and carried through to the order.
Order data can also reach OpenAI through an intermediary that sits between the retailer and the platform.
- LiveRamp became the first independent ad tech company to send conversion data into OpenAI's Conversions API in June 2026 (Digiday, June 2026).
- In that setup, LiveRamp attaches a hashed email and forwards the transaction to OpenAI, and "the attribution methodology belongs to the platform" (Digiday, June 2026).
- On May 17, 2026, Publicis Groupe agreed to acquire LiveRamp, with the deal expected to close before year-end 2026, subject to approvals (Publicis Groupe, 2026).
When a retailer's order data reaches OpenAI only through a partner, the record of what a ChatGPT ad shopper bought is built outside the retailer, and the network's own reports have to agree with it afterward. That outside record is also the one OpenAI uses for view-through versus click-through credit. A network that sends its own record reports from the same data OpenAI received.
Server-side data consistency at a Fortune 50 retailer
MetaRouter's own evidence on sending one record to many destinations comes from a Fortune 50 retailer that moved most of its third-party tags server-side through a private Google Cloud deployment of MetaRouter. Before the move, the retailer's tools disagreed with each other.
- Data across the retailer's third-party tools varied by an average of 35% from tool to tool (MetaRouter case study).
- With MetaRouter, the retailer's data variability fell to 1% (MetaRouter case study).
- About 700ms came off page load time once the tags moved off the page (MetaRouter case study).
The result covers the retailer's existing analytics and media tools; retail media and AI traffic were outside its scope. MetaRouter's OpenAI integration adds OpenAI to the same collection layer: it captures the URL-based identifier, enriches events with hashed identifiers, and sends full-funnel events from page views to orders.
A spread that wide means each tool kept its own version of what happened. When every destination reads from one record, a retail media network's report and OpenAI's start from the same order.
AI shopping traffic growth for the 2026 holidays
AI traffic to retail sites keeps multiplying, from a base Adobe itself called modest last season. Adobe counts AI traffic as shoppers clicking a link from a generative AI tool to a US retail site.
- Nearly 3,500% was the growth in AI referrals to retail sites between July 2024 and May 2025 (Adobe Digital Insights, 2025).
- In the 2025 holiday season, AI traffic to US retail sites rose 693.4% year over year (Adobe, 2025 season recap).
- Cyber Monday 2025 saw AI traffic to US retail sites rise 670% year over year (Adobe, 2025 season recap).
- "While the base of users remains modest, the uptick shows the value AI can deliver as a shopping assistant," Adobe wrote of its 2025 holiday data (Adobe, 2025 season recap).
- 39% of US consumers say they have used AI for online shopping, in an Adobe survey (Adobe, 2026).
- Between 30% and 45% of US consumers used generative AI for product research and comparison in 2025 (Bain & Company, 2025).
Search still sends far more visitors than AI tools do.
- Google sent 345x more traffic than ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity combined in March 2025 (Ahrefs, 2025).
- By June 2025, Google was sending roughly 210x more traffic than the same three AI tools (Ahrefs, 2025).
- On Ahrefs' own site, AI search visitors were 0.5% of traffic but drove 12.1% of signups (Ahrefs, own-site data).
AI-referred sessions will be well up on last year and still small next to search. Only the visits that start from a ChatGPT ad carry OpenAI's click identifier. For the rest, the retailer's own record of the visit and the order is the only account of what the agent sent. The network that records these visits itself this year holds the baseline brands will ask for next year.
Cyber Week 2026 online sales forecast
The holiday money arrives in a short window and mostly on phones. Adobe's forecast covers November 1 to December 31, 2026, and is based on Adobe Analytics data from US retail sites.
- US online holiday sales will reach $275.1 billion in 2026 (Adobe, 2026 forecast).
- 6.7% is the forecast growth over the 2025 season (Adobe, 2026 forecast).
- Cyber Week 2026 will drive $47.5 billion in US online spending (Adobe, 2026 forecast).
- Of the full season's online spend, 17.3% is expected to come during Cyber Week 2026 (Adobe, 2026 forecast).
- In the 2025 holiday season, US consumers spent $257.8 billion online, up 6.8% year over year (Adobe, 2025 season recap).
- Cyber Week 2025 drove $44.2 billion in US online spending, up 7.7% year over year (Adobe, Cyber Monday 2025 release).
- 57.5% of Cyber Monday 2025 online sales came through mobile devices (Adobe, Cyber Monday 2025 release).
- Across the 2025 season, 56.4% of US online holiday transactions took place on a smartphone (Adobe, 2025 season recap).
Adobe's revenue-share figures cover the older paid and social channels.
- Social media drove 4.6% of US online holiday revenue in 2025 (Adobe, 2025 season recap).
- Paid search's share of holiday revenue is expected to rise 4% in 2026, behind larger gains for social media and affiliates (Adobe, 2026 forecast).
Adobe's holiday figures on this page give AI referrals a traffic number and no revenue share. The retailer's checkout knows what those shoppers spent. Capturing the ChatGPT ad click has to work before Cyber Week starts, because nobody changes a checkout in the middle of it.
Retail media ad spending forecasts for 2026
Retail media sells on closed-loop measurement, and its growth still outruns the ad market. The fastest-growing part of it runs off the retailer's site.
- US retail media was expected to grow 20% in 2025, against 4.3% for the total ad market (Nielsen, 2025).
- 65% of global marketers said retail media networks would play a bigger part in their media mix (Nielsen 2025 Annual Marketing Report).
- US retail media ad spending will reach $69.33 billion in 2026, up 17.9% (eMarketer, 2026).
- By 2030, global retail media spending will reach $312 billion, up from $184 billion in 2025 (Forrester).
- Global retail media spend will hit $223.4 billion in 2027, 15.2% of worldwide ad spend (WARC).
- US offsite retail media ad spend was forecast to grow 42.1% in 2025 (eMarketer forecast).
- Offsite media will be about 30% of retail media spending within five years, with onsite at about 70% (BCG).
- Spending on retailers' owned channels will grow 22% a year over the next five years (BCG).
Offsite is where the ad runs on someone else's site and the sale still closes on the retailer's. A network that reports AI-referred sales from its own record has a closed-loop result to sell to the brands now buying ChatGPT ads. One that reports them from a partner's record is selling a result it did not record.
Retail media measurement priorities for buyers
Buyers want outcome metrics they can trust across networks, and the path from an ad to a sale keeps getting harder to observe in the browser.
- Return on ad spend is the most in-demand metric among retail media buyers, at 88% (IAB Europe).
- Lack of standardization is a top barrier to growth for 53% of retail media stakeholders (IAB Europe).
- 51% of the same stakeholders cite network fragmentation as a top barrier (IAB Europe).
- 66% of organizations use data clean rooms in some capacity (Skai, 2025 State of Retail Media).
- By default, 34.9% of US browsers block third-party cookies (eMarketer).
ROAS on a ChatGPT ad sale starts from the ad click tied to the order. A collection layer can read the click identifier on the retailer's own domain and store it as first-party data. That keeps the tie when the browser blocks third-party cookies. A network that holds its own record from the first pageview can give buyers the ROAS they ask for without waiting on a partner's match.
Capturing the AI conversion before Cyber Week
Many retailers are close to their holiday code freeze, so keep the pre-peak work to one test.
Run a test purchase from a ChatGPT ad link and trace it through the stack. Confirm the click identifier is on the landing request and still attached to the order event when the shopper returns on a later visit. Then confirm the order reaches OpenAI once and shows in the network's own reporting with the AI referral on it. A lost click identifier is fixed at the collection layer. An identifier that was never captured can't be recovered later in the warehouse. The brand-facing report on AI-referred sales and the pricing conversation that follows can wait until January.
MetaRouter is the customer context infrastructure that captures identity, behavior, and consent in real time, inside your own cloud, before the moment is lost. For a retail media network, that puts the first record of an AI-referred sale inside the network's own cloud, beside the checkout where the sale closed. MetaRouter's OpenAI integration comes with pre-built mappings for the full funnel, from page views to completed orders.
