Introducing Customer Context Infrastructure

The paradox for consumer CEOs today is that they know everything about what their customers are doing but are unable to respond when it matters - the moment the customer is ready to buy. The data to act exists. But it is trapped in a dozen different tools across the customer journey that don't talk to each other. Hence, the context of what the consumer wants and where they are in their journey is lost. It isn't for lack of trying: the CDP, the data lake, the data science team, and those tools across the marketing technology landscape - the investment is there and each piece is working. The issue is that the pieces just can't come together fast enough to act in the critical moment as the customer decides.

Picture one customer’s journey: They open your email with the great offer on something they want but don't click. Then they click on your Instagram ad for that product. They organically land on your website that evening home page, ready to buy that very item. To your email tool, they're an email address. To Meta's pixel, they're an anonymous click. To your website, they are a brand new session that is unaware of their interest in that item. That session ends when they close the tab in frustration that they aren't. Three systems, three identities, none of them talking to each other to share the context of that customer’s journey. By the time your data team stitches it together hours or days later, the moment is gone; the customer has bought what they were looking for from your competitor.

However, the technology to respond in real time has been around for years. The big tech consumer companies have been delivering this level of real time personal experiences for years. You watch something on Netflix on your laptop, and the recommendations on your TV change before you've sat down. You search on Google with your phone, and your laptop browser on Google already knows. One tap on Instagram reshapes the entire feed. That's real-time personalization based on customer context: understanding what someone wants the instant they show you a digital signal, and responding before the moment passes.

The recent advancements in AI were supposed to enable any business to understand its customers the way the tech giants do. But the promise has stalled not because the AI wasn't ready, but because the data underneath it was scattered across dozens of disconnected tools. You can't build intelligence on a foundation that's in pieces.

That brings us to why I joined MetaRouter. Tim Brunk and the team had already built the underlying customer data infrastructure that I'd built at Walmart to power initially their marketing but extended to support their Retail Media Network also. What's new is the real-time inference layer we're adding on top of it now — and that combination is what we call Customer Context Infrastructure (CCI): the foundation that finally puts big tech's personalization within reach of everyone else.

MetaRouter captures what your customer does across all of their touch points — email, ads, web, app, and now agentic commerce — and streams it in real time into one place. It connects the identities across those touch points into one ID graph that you own. It seamlessly integrates with your consent management platform to share customer consent everywhere it needs to go. It builds an understanding of intent as customers click, browse and now increasingly chat. Now, your email tool knows about the Instagram click, and your Instagram targeting knows about the email open and organic website visit.

The context follows the customer, instead of getting lost between the tools.

Most critical of all, the context infrastructure runs inside your own cloud managed by MetaRouter’s world class team of forward deployed engineers. Your data, your control, your privacy and security rules. No copies scattered across a dozen vendors, no data tax, no compliance risk you never signed up for. You're no longer paying to duplicate the same data ten times over, and the cost of running AI on top of it.

This is what real-time customer context makes possible: responding to your customers in their moment of truth with their complete context, while spending far less to do it. Once only available within the walls of big tech companies, this capability - context infrastructure - is now available via MetaRouter for everyone. It seamlessly integrates with all your investments in marketing technology to share identity, consent and most importantly context across all those tools. It ensures your investments in those tools work harder, and deliver more because of that shared understanding. It future proofs your decisions, giving you the power to orchestrate multiple tools together and not being under tremendous pressure to make the difficult choice between the tool that has the best UI or the tool that has the best AI; or from the martech giant whose CEO is on your board vs the best in class startup that your CMO wants to buy from.

Ultimately, MetaRouter exists to help you fully understand your customers and build a trusted relationship with them;a relationship based on a deep understanding of who they are, and what they are trying to do right now, in this moment.
